I'm
British But..., a documentary produced for the
British Film Institute, shows how second-generation
Asians in Britain, caught between two cultural
landscapes, are trying to develop their own
identity. In interviews, four young people from
different backgrounds discuss their parents, their
lives, their perception of themselves and their
relation to British culture and society. The film
shows the importance of language, music and dress
in creating a multicultural society.
This
documentary presents a varied and positive image of
what it is like to live in two cultures and is a
good starting point for the study of cultural
identity, assimilation and acculturation.
